Visiting Mende
It is well known that Mende is a good place to live! Perhaps because the region has been renowned for the virtues of its thermal waters since Gallo-Roman times... Numerous centres specialising in well-being are scattered around the streets of the town, and the thermal spa of Bagnols-les-Bains is less than 20 km away!
But Mende is above all a unique historical centre, and a gothic cathedral which enjoyed particular glory between the 14th and 16th centuries. To visit Mende is to visit History with a capital H! Indeed, the city was once the seat of the powerful Counts-Bishops: religious wars, commercial prosperity and even technological innovation (Mende was one of the first French cities to benefit from public lighting) transpire through its architecture and cultural heritage. One of the most famous examples is the Notre-Dame bridge!
Your stay in Mende and surroundings
During your stay in Mende you have some time to explore the surrounding area? Mende is located on the edge of the "Grands Causses" region, these high limestone plateaus dotted with valleys and gorges characteristic of the southern Massif Central. The Mont Mimat, which overlooks the town, is also called the Causse de Mende! But some are higher and offer majestic landscapes like the famous Causse Méjan, located less than an hour from Mende.
Mende is also located in the ancient province of Gévaudan, whose name evokes an infinite imagination populated by legendary beasts... In the 18th century, several dozen people were victims of a mysterious beast: dog, bear, wolf? The mystery remains to this day! And it was the Count-Bishop of Gévaudan, Gabriel-Florent de Choiseul-Beaupré, who described these attacks and the beast as a "divine scourge" in a text known today as the "Mandement de l'évêque de Mende"...
But rest assured, no beast will disturb your sleep in our hotel in Mende!
